Today Governor Crist signed into legislation a new law to try to limit auto accidents in Florida. The law was pushed by consumer activist groups including Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Florida Justice Association. Under this law motorists convicted of driving under the influence must have automobile bodily injury insurance of at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per incident, and $50,000 in property damage insurance.

This is a start but lets get MADD to address one of the major causes of auto accidents in Florida: the bars that sell the liquor to drunken patrons and then send them out on the roads. Florida has some of the weakest Dram Shop laws in the country. Bars here can sell liquor to drunks with very little chance of being held responsible for their actions. We need stronger laws to stop this conduct similar to the laws of many other states where those who profit from selling alcohol and sending drunks out on the road are required to share in the cost of the damages they cause is car crashes.
