Truck Roll-over Kills Driver Without a Seatbelt

A 50 year-old Eustis man was almost home when he lost control of his pickup just enough so that he caught the shoulder of the road on a curve. The pickup rolled over and ended up resting against a fence. Unfortunately the driver was not wearing his seatbelt and was partially thrown from the vehicle and was trapped beneath it. He did not survive the accident.

Jay Hamburg of the Olando Sentinel reports that the number of Floridians wearing seatbelts dropped 1 percent last year to 79%. And we are below the national average of 81% of all drivers wearing seatbelts. State and local officials are concerned about this trend and want the driving public to be aware of the following statistics:

2,103 people were killed in vehicles equipped with safety belts in Florida in 2006.

Almost 62 percent of those killed (1,301) were not wearing safety belts.

72 percent of Florida children killed in crashes were not using seat belts or child seats.

It's certainly nothing new and everyone should know by now that seatbelts save lives. Remember to buckle up every time you get in your vehicle.
