The manufacturer of Oxycontin pain medicine was fined over 600 million dollars for fraudulently representing to physicians that OxyContin was less addictive and less subject to abuse than other pain medications. In fact just the opposite was true as the drug is so addictive it has been compared to heroin. The statements resulted in sales of billions of dollars for the manufacturer of the drug.

Some of the families of the victims were not happy with the deal. "I feel you are legal drug users, nothing more than a large corporate drug cartel," Lee Nuss of Palm Coast, Fla., said at the hearing. She brought her deceased son's ashes with her to show tangible proof of the distress and hardship caused by the fraud and marketing of the drug. This is another example of defective or dangerous products marketed to the public for profit without regard to the danger that they represent to consumers.
