More Laptop Computer Batteries Recalled

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled Lithium-Ion computer batteries used in several brands of laptop computers - Hewlett Packard, Dell and Toshiba. The CPSC recommends that consumers stop using the batteries immediately, remove the battery pack and run the laptops strickly with the power cable.

The recall was initiated after the CDC received reports of 19 overheated batteries, 17 of which involved flames and damage to the computer and 2 reports of minor injuries. This laptop battery recall is the first for 2008 but there were several brands recalled in 2007 including Dell, Sanyo, Toshiba and Sanyo, and Apple and Sony had recalls in 2006.

Approximately 35,000 laptops were sold in 2008 with the faulty batteries and an additional 65,000 replacement batteries were sold worldwide. The approximate breakdown by brand is: 32,000 HP's; 3,000 Toshibas; and 150 Dell Notebook laptops.
