Golf carts as a means of every day transportation is increasing steadily as consumers try to find a way to beat the high price of gas. This is particarly so in Florida's retirement communities such as The Villages where residents feel safe zooming aroung in their little golf carts.

But a recent study out of the University of Birmingham, Alabama shows that they may be cheaper to run, butgolf cartscan also be dangerous. According to the report, about 1,000 people per month are injured while either driving or riding in golf carts. The statistics show that the injuries are highest in the 10 - 19 age group and those also over the age of 80.

For the most part, golf cart usage is totally unregulated. There are no requirements for training, helmets, or seatbelts. This combined with the increased usage on pubic roads could be a recipe for disaster.

According to UAB researcher Gerald McGwin, "Golf carts are an attractive transportation solution due to their low emissions and cost effectiveness when compared to traditional motor vehicles," he said. "But more stringent safety standards should be applied to the design and use of golf carts, particularly those operated on public roads."
